THE CALL
Start early on the northern inflow channels and coves, specifically the first major creek arm off the main lake north of the dam. Use a heavy spinnerbait or bulky swim jig in chartreuse/white or black/blue, slow-rolled just under the surface. Prime time is the first 2–3 hours of daylight, before the sun tops the trees.
WHY IT WINS
- Historical clarity analysis shows the northern arms are the most productive, with stained to murky water that forces fish to rely on vibration and profile—exactly what a heavy spinnerbait or swim jig delivers.
- Thermal imagery (from February) revealed a consistent pattern of fish seeking warmer, more stable water in the western basin; in summer, that same basin holds cooler, oxygenated water near creek inflows and shaded banks, concentrating bait and predators.
- Stable pressure and no wind data suggest a neutral, predictable bite, ideal for a slow, methodical presentation that lets fish track the bait in low visibility.
START HERE
Run north from the Chatuge Dam ramp into the first big creek arm on the east side (roughly 1.5 miles north of the dam). Focus on the first 200 yards inside the creek mouth, where the stained inflow meets clearer main-lake water. Work the wind-blown side of the bank if any breeze exists; otherwise, hit the shady north bank first.
THROW THIS
- Primary: ½ oz spinnerbait with double willow blades, chartreuse/white skirt, slow-roll just fast enough to tick the tops of submerged grass or laydowns.
- Backup: ⅜ oz black/blue swim jig with a matching chunk trailer, dead-stick or hop it through the same zones if the spinnerbait draws follows but no eats.
BEST WINDOW
Be on the water by 6:00 AM local time. The first two hours of light are the only reliable window given the heat and clarity. After 9:00 AM, the surface warms and fish slide deeper or tighter to shade, killing the reaction bite.
NEXT MOVE
If the northern creek arm is dead after 45 minutes, slide south to the first main-lake point with a steep drop-off and rock cover. Fish a football jig or deep-diving crankbait in 12–18 ft, targeting the edge of the channel.
