Little Seneca Lake Fishing Report
The 1:30 start you had was late — you missed the high-control window by 30 minutes.
Got it — those were short strikes, not catches. That changes the read: the fish were willing to bite but wouldn't commit to the Senko or Whopper Plopper. That's a presentation problem, not a location problem.
SUNKEN TREES vs. DOCKS — YES, GO TO THE TREES
You're right that boat traffic around docks spooks the bigger fish during the afternoon. Sunken trees are a better bet because they offer true shade and ambush cover without the pressure. The key: you must verify the tree on site — look for a dark shape, a limb breaking the surface, or a stump shadow on the bottom. I have no mapped evidence of specific sunken trees on this lake, so scout the shoreline with your electronics and look for any hard return off the bottom in 5–15 ft of water.
DEEP MID-RIVER WITH NO COVER — YES, BUT ONLY IF YOU VERIFY IT
Fishing deep, open water in the middle of the river works when there's a depth change, a hard bottom transition, or a subtle contour that holds fish. The evidence says: "use electronics to verify a depth change, oxygenated water, or shade before committing because summer is a calendar heuristic." So yes, go there — but idle over it first. If you see fish arches or a bottom change (e.g., 12 ft to 18 ft ledge), then drop a big worm (plum or black, 10-inch) on a Texas rig and drag it slow. If you see nothing on the graph, don't waste time — move back to visible cover.
THE ONE MOVE THAT MATTERS NEXT TIME
Replace the Senko and Whopper Plopper with a bladed jig, 3/8 oz, black-blue / junebug. It throws vibration and silhouette, which is exactly what you need when the fish are nipping but not committing. Slow-roll it near the sunken trees you verify. If you get a short strike again, switch to a Texas-rigged big worm and dead-stick it at the base of that tree. That will get the committed bite.
BEST WINDOW: 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM (local EDT, based on forecast control scores). That's the calmest, most manageable window. The 1:30 start you had was late — you missed the high-control window by 30 minutes.
