Tampier Lake
Tampier Lake is a scenic and well-maintained recreational area located in Cook County, Illinois. This 118-acre lake was created in 1964 by damming Long Run Creek. The lake has a maximum depth of 10 feet and an average depth of 5.5 feet. The shoreline of Tampier Lake drops quickly to the average depth, then expands into a featureless basin offering little bathymetry. Despite its shallow depth, Tampier Lake supports a very good sport fishery. The lake's fishing piers, handicap access, boat/kayak rentals, and live bait/tackle are available throughout the summer from a concessionaire. A concrete boat launch is available for trailered boats, and ample parking is available. Boats with electric motors are allowed, however gas motors must be removed. No fish cleaning station is available. Tampier Lake offers a range of fishing opportunities for anglers. The lake's diverse habitat supports a variety of fish species, including bluegill, channel catfish, crappie, largemouth bass, northern pike, and walleye. The FPDCC collects walleye from Tampier Lake for brood purposes to support some of their supplemental stocking needs. Rooted aquatic vegetation is sparse because wind-driven re-suspension of soft sediments impacts water clarity and thus light penetration. Periodic fish surveys are conducted by either the IDNR or FPDCC Fisheries Staff to evaluate the fishery. Tampier Lake is a popular spot for recreational activities. In addition to fishing, visitors can enjoy picnicking and camping at the park. The lake also has boat ramps and boat rentals available, making it a great spot for kayaking or canoeing. However, skiing and swimming are not allowed in the lake. The park offers a beautiful natural setting and a chance to experience the outdoors. The park's picnic areas and camping sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Visitors are encouraged to respect the park's rules and regulations, and to help keep the park clean and beautiful for future visitors.
